If you are left with no choice but to build a home theater in a room where there are windows, you need to consider putting curtains over the windows. Home Theater Curtains can really help in preserving the atmosphere in the home theater. Movie theaters are known to be dark rooms where only the light coming from the screen can be seen.
A home theater becomes useless when you are watching a movie with bright light from outside is infiltrating the room. Having the room dark allows your eyes to see vivid color and every detail on the screen.
What do you need to know when choosing your home theater curtain?
These are commonly referred to as draperies because of their thick material. Yes, a thicker material sets home theater curtains apart from others since it can completely block out the light trying to enter the room. Their main purpose is to keep the room as dark as possible.
The most important factor that you need to consider when making the home theater a dark place is the color. Curtains come in a variety of colors like blue, pink, yellow, camel, black and all the other colors that you may have in a 96-piece Crayola box. The best choice that you can have is to choose dark colors. Lighter colors reflect light which may cause chaos in the color that are projected from the screen, darker colors do not allow light to penetrate into the room unlike when light colors are used.
Choosing whether to go for a plain home theater curtain or a patterned one is a decision that depends on the design of your home theater. You need to consider the overall look of your theater. Your curtains may be a big part of your home theater which may pull the look together. The material to be used can also be chosen depending on your home theater. Curtains are available in velvet and remain a popular choice for most owners. They look sophisticated and add an edge to your room’s design. Cotton is another choice but you may want to consider this cheaper alternative to be effective when used in layers.
Curtains are available in a variety of sizes ranging from 28 – 200 inches. You need to keep in mind that you would want just the right height of the curtain, a few inches from the floor. If it touches the floor, people might get caught in it causing accidents. Besides from the size, materials used can differ from each curtain.
Usually, they are classified based on how they open whether through the center, from either sides or from only one side. You may want your home theater curtain designed according to what you like. There are manufacturer who accept custom made jobs depending on the specifications. No matter how or where you would purchase your curtains, you need to make sure that you are getting your money’s worth.
Just remember to keep in mind the tips on what home Home Theater Curtains will maximize you movie experience.

Drapery, particularly commercial drapery, when properly installed can provide moderately effective sound absorption in addition to good light-blocking performance. Commercial grade theatrical drapery–constructed from 25-32 oz (per linear yard) flame retardant (FR) cotton velour fabric spanning from floor to ceiling–would provide the ultimate drapery solution. A much less expensive alternative to velour is to use two-ply, FR treated, 100% cotton Super Commando Cloth drapery. These types of commercial grade drapery must be hung from heavy-duty commercial curtain tracks to support the heavier fabrics and construction. The most notable downside is that this type of drapery solution can be exceedingly expensive, esp. for the average homeowner.
By the way, in order to maximize effectiveness of drapery when used as an acoustical treatment, you want the drapery to have no less than 50% fullness and it should be mounted no less than 12 inches or more from walls and windows. Mounting drapery away from room boundaries helps form a sufficiently deep air boundary layer in order to more effectively damp excessive or unwanted low frequency energy. (I recommend obtaining a copy of the Master Handbook of Acoustics by F. Alton Everest if you would like more information.) Please be aware that the substantial and indiscriminate application of heavy sound absorption in close proximity to loudspeakers, essentially creating an undesirable quasi-LEDE effect, will more often than not adversely impact acoustical performance when it comes to audio and music reproduction. (There are a few layered drapery solutions that could be made to work moderately well however they would be too lengthy to detail here.) It is also worth noting that without some form of effective air quality control, more specifically air filtration, curtains will typically accumulate large amounts of dust from your environment, which in turn necessitates regular cleaning. This can easily lead to an additional recurring expense in time and/or money.
Regardless of the window covering that you use to block light from entering into your room you should attempt to utilize more acoustically beneficial acoustical treatments on the innermost side of the window coverings or windows. One solution that I believe would offer better performance is to install light-blocking motorized rollshutters on the exterior along with a transparent acoustical treatment such as RPG’s Deamp® Clearsorber™ technology on the interior side of the windows, both of which (excluding the fixed style Clearsorber™ panels,) can be controlled from the A/V system. A more aesthetically pleasing and potentially more cost-effective, energy efficient alternative to motorized rollshutters would be to install smart glass¹. Either of these solutions, combined with additional acoustical treatment in the room, would provide the best light-blocking and aesthetics along with much better acoustical performance than the drapery method alone.
By this point you may have noticed this is an area where costs can easily and rapidly escalate. If you value acoustics and would like to keep your total cost to a minimum it would be to your advantage to hire or consult a licensed professional acoustician with experience in this particular area.
The bottom line is that there really are no truly effective, low-cost solutions for heavily windowed rooms therefore you may want to explore as many alternatives as possible to find the most cost-effective.
