One thing you want to think about is the screen and projector. These are two things that need to be matched. The type of screen that you use will depend on the type of projector that you use but there are several styles. You could have a fixed screen or one that rolls up and down with an electric motor. The projectors themselves are probably going to be the biggest expense in your system unless you go crazy on the seating. Projectors can range in price from about $1,500 to over $10,000. Choose the one that fits your budget and needs the best. After you choose a projector you will then want to think about speakers. Sound is a big part of a great home theater. You want to hear and feel the movie as well as see it. You will want at a minimum a good five speaker system with a sub woofer. There will be a center speaker, a left and right front speaker and a left and right rear speaker. Lastly you will want to think about seating. You can go all out and use stadium seating or just buy a couple of comfy couches. The choice is up to you and what kind of feel you want.
